Amy Abroad: A Day in Assisi

Last Saturday, we decided to take a day trip to Assisi. So Che, Anny, and I got up super early to catch an 8:00 train to Assisi. Anny and I were “teaching” Che how to navigate the train system in Italy… and we were totally humbled. Instead of a 2 hour train ride straight to Assisi, we misread our train ticket and got off in Arezzo. Then had to wait for the next train (in 45 mins) to Terontola. And we got off again. Then had to wait another 1.5 hours to take a train to Assisi. So, instead of remaining on our first train, we took quite a detour (6 loooooong hours.) Once we got to Assisi, we agreed it was definitely worth it.

The city is on a mountain, so you have to take a short bus ride to the monastery of St. Francis. The view from the city is beautiful, overlooking Umbria (the region where Assisi is located.) St. Francis left quite a legacy on this country and all of Christianity (esp Catholicism) as you can see in these cute little monks!

The church was stunning. There are two levels- the bottom is so ornate and covered in frescoes with various scenes of the bible and lives of saints, and the top church has frescos painted by Giotto detailing stories from the Old Testament, the life of Christ, and the life of St. Francis. It was quite possibly my most favorite church in all of Italy- and I have been to quite a lot!
