We got off the train and a man named Rocky took us to our room. Unfortunately when we got there, it was HIGH TIDE and the only way to our place was through about 5-6 inches of water. Normal day in Venice. So, sweet Rocky brought us some fashionable water boots.
Here is our cute room! We found it on AirBNB- a traveling necessity. As you can see, the water comes into the apt building also.
After getting settled, we started our tour of Venice. Lots of pictures. We went into the bell tower in St. Mark’s square and were able to see all of the other islands in the lagoon. It was so pretty.
After some gelato, we found the Phoenix Theater and the Bridge of Sighs. (Covered in advertising!)
Then we walked around and got lost for a few hours, navigating tiny streets that hopefully wouldn’t end in canal to find our place. After that journey, we were too tired to go out to dinner so just ate some Italian snacks in the apt.
Saturday morning, we got up early to visit St. Mark’s basilica and the Palazzo Ducale (Doges Palace). The water was so high in St. Mark’s Square, it was coming into the church!
The Palazzo Ducale was very interesting. We were able to see some beautiful art from Venetian Renaissance artists and walk across the Bridge of Sighs. (This bridge is named “the Bridge of Sighs” because it connected the courthouse/ducal palace with the prison, and was often the last view of Venice inmates had for the rest of their lives. Their last view of freedom.)
Dad somehow found a guy that was promoting trips to the island of Murano, so we caught a water taxi to Murano to visit a glass factory.
We learned a lot about glass blowing and the glass-making industry. Walked around a showroom with a salesman for about an hour… and to his dismay, bought nothing. :) After lunch, we explored Murano a bit more then headed home.
We made reservations at this wonderful restaurant in Venice called La Zucca (the pumpkin). We took a mini-gondola ferry boat across the Grande Canal and explored a little bit. La Zucca was amazing. I got the pumpkin flan (thanks for the reco, Che).
That night as we were walking home, we ran into KITTY! Crazy small world.
On Sunday morning, we had to say goodbye to our lovely Venice. Here are some parting shots, including dad’s gangsta picture.
